Fitness Test

The following describes the physical fitness event for the 1st Annual Pack Hunter Games in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

The physical fitness test will consist of three exercises comprising a ‘circuit’. The scoring is based on the number of full circuits completed in a continuous 12-15 minute cycle. Water breaks and rest breaks do not halt the time, however, competitors are permitted to do either within the 12-minute period. Competitors are encouraged to go for 15 minutes as additional points will be garnered for this, however, the minimum time is 12 minutes.

The exercises comprising the circuit are as follows: 5 pull ups, 10 standard pushups, 15 body weight squats.

The rules for each are as follows:

  1. All circuits will be completed in the following sequence: 5 pull ups, 10 pushups, and 15 body weight squats.
  2. The correct number of correct repetitions of each exercise must be achieved prior to moving on to the next exercise.
  3. Scoring is based on completed circuits only. For example, a competitor is finishing his last squats but completes squat #15 at 15:00:01, he does not receive credit for the last circuit except in the event of a tie breaker
  4. In the event of a tie, we will first look at number of full circuits completed in 12 minutes. So competitor A completes 13 circuits in 12 minutes. Competitor B completes 13 circuits in 14 minutes. Competitor A is victorious in this scenario. If this is insufficient in determining the winner we will look at the number of partial circuits completed. In the example above we will then count 2/3 of a circuit. If there remains a tie after that additional calculation we, will use the number of repetitions on the final failed set. Again in the example above that would be 14 squats.
  5. Competitors may have a water bottle, Gatorade or other sports drink, and towel near them. They may get water, towel off, shake out sore limbs, or stretch out at any point during the PT competition, however: the clock will not stop once it is started.
  6. Each competitor must do all three exercises for a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 15 minutes.
  7. Any competitor who receives physical aid to complete a rep is disqualified from the entire Physical Fitness event. Non PT competing team members are encouraged to cheer rabidly for their teammates however, physically assisting the competitor is a no no. Physical Fitness competitors who are disqualified from the PT event may still compete in the other events. The disqualified competitor’s team will not be eligible for the Wolf Pack Award if the disqualified member is their only PT competitor.
  8. Military standards will be the default standard for all three exercises.
  9. Judges will count each rep of each repetition so the competitor knows that his reps count. If a judge repeats the number of reps for example “1,2,3,4,4,4” that means that the competitor has not done the 5th rep correctly and must do so. The judge will inform the competitor of the defect if asked. The competitor is permitted to stop grab water or stretch the tired limbs and then continue the same exercise at the same place. All repetitions for each exercise must be completed before going to the next exercise. For example “1,2,3,4,4,4.. (competitor stretches momentarily and then continues with good form) 5, 6,” etc.
  10. Competitors must acquire the proper start position in each exercise. For example, jumping off the ground into the pull ups and using the momentum from the jump to get the first repetition of pull ups is not permitted.
  11. The judges are permitted to stop anyone who appears too sick, appears to have heat exhaustion, or appears otherwise too unstable to complete their circuit safely. In the event of judge intervention the number of full circuits prior to the judge intervening will be used to calculate that competitors’ score.
  12. The Pull Up
    1. Pull ups will be executed from a full hang with the feet off the ground. If the competitor is tall enough to hold the bar with his or feet on the ground they will be required to pull their feet up and keep their legs bent. If a competitor’s feet touch the ground before they achieve a full hang that repetition will not count.
    2. Competitor's arms will extend to straight between each pull up. If competitors fail to achieve a straight arm that pull up will not count.
    3. Competitors may kick, squirm, and gyrate on their pull up reps provided they achieve a straight arm hang in between.
    4. Competitors must pull themselves high enough so that the point of the chin is above the pull up bar.
    5. Competitors must complete 5 pull ups prior to beginning the pushups.
  13. The Push Up
    1. The push up will be executed with only the hands and feet contacting the ground.
    2. The up, or start, position is with the body in a generally straight line from shoulder joint to ankle with minimal sagging or arching in the waist and hips. Hands are generally under the shoulder plus or minus two hand widths.
    3. The low point of the push up is determined by the triceps muscle or upper arm being parallel with the ground. The up position of the push up is the starting, generally straight, position with the elbows straight.
    4. As explained before, the competitor may take a break on his or her knees or get up and shake out sore muscles in the middle of the set. They must reacquire the start position prior to the next rep counting, however.
    5. The competitor will maintain a generally straight line throughout the movement.
    6. Competitors must complete 10 pushups prior to going on to squats.
  14. Body Weight Squats
    1. This is a variation of traditional squats but no weights are used. The competitor will lower his body as though sitting into a chair until the hip joint is even with the knee joint. This will place the knee in a 90-degree bend.
    2. Using your arms for momentum is permitted.
    3. The following conditions are not illegal, but are not recommended as they may injure the competitor or cause early muscle failure:
      1. Knees should not go past toes.
      2. Back should be flat, not rounded (if you look upward that helps ensure this).
      3. Don’t hunch the shoulders.
    4. As with the other exercises in the circuit a competitor may take a break during any squat set, reacquire the start position and recommence at the same number of repetition in the count.
    5. The start position is standing up with hips and knees generally straight.
    6. The down position is: legs at 90-degree bend with butt sticking out back.
    7. Competitors must complete 15 correct squats before beginning the next circuit at the pull up bar.
    8. Competitors may wear shorts, t-shirts, sweats. Competitors do not have to wear shoes and socks, however, they must maintain shorts and t-shirts throughout the PT event. Cut off sleeves, tank tops, bare midriffs, etc are all permitted but the shirt must cover the pectorals. Female competitors must wear a t-shirt even if they are wearing a sports bra. Judges may require competitors to alter or change their clothing entirely if they do not feel that they can accurately determine the competitor’s form because of said clothing.
